Frequently Asked Questions
Some of the Frequently Asked Questions by our patients here at Joint Reaction.
How can I arrange to be seen by Joint Reaction?
Simply contact us direct if you wish to see the next available orthopaedic consultant specialising in your particular condition or treatment. Our Practice Manager Julie will be able to give you more information about all the Joint Reaction consultants. If you know the name of the consultant you would like to see, simply contact their secretary direct here (link) to make an appointment.
Who are your consultants?
Joint Reaction is one of the UK’s largest groups of consulting orthopaedic specialists. All have held posts at consultant level at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey and some are current or ex-Army surgeons. You can meet all our consultants here.
Where can I be seen for my consultation?
Joint Reaction is based at Spire Clare Park Hospital. Our orthopaedic specialists at Joint Reaction also consult at other local private hospitals. For more details, speak to the individual consultant’s secretary to discuss where you could be seen.
Will I need a scan?
Your consultant may request some imaging to help with the diagnosis of your issue or injury. The type of scan will depend on what physical structures he needs to see – bone, hard tissues, soft tissue, cartilage, muscles, etc. For more details, see our section on scans.
Will I need an operation?
Only 30% of people our consultants see require surgery. Many orthopaedic problems simply require physiotherapy to help resolve them. Other conditions may not be helped by physiotherapy or other complementary therapies. In these cases, your consultant would discuss surgical options at the time of the initial consultation. For details of orthopaedic treatments both surgical and non-evasive, see our Treatments page.
Where can I have my surgery?
Joint Reaction surgeons operate at a range of hospitals across the south of England. Click here for the full locations list.
Do I have to have private health insurance?
Private health insurance is not required. For more details see our “Do I need private medical insurance” page.
Can I transfer my care back to the NHS once I have been seen by Joint Reaction?
It is possible to transfer to the NHS at any stage of your treatment. However, no priority is given to you over other NHS patients and you may end up on a lengthy waiting list as a result. You will also need to ask your GP to refer you to the appropriate NHS service/s.
How can I find out the cost of treatment?
We pride ourselves on transparent billing and clear pricing, including fixed price treatment packages. Our page on payment options has all the details you need, whether you’re claiming costs through health insurance or paying fees yourself.
When will I be discharged from hospital after initial treatment?
This obviously varies on the type of surgery performed. To be discharged you must be fully mobile, self-caring and able to walk up and down stairs safely. The final decision on discharge is made via the nursing staff, physiotherapist and treating consultant. You may like to consider putting in place professional respite home care if family are unable to support your recovery at home.
Where do I go for physiotherapy following surgery?
Joint Reaction has links with many groups of local physiotherapists. It is usually more appropriate to be treated by your local physiotherapist as this avoids long journeys in the post-operative period.
When will I be seen for my follow up consultation?
This depends upon the type of surgery performed but will generally be between 2 and 6 weeks after your surgery. Follow up appointments are made by the secretary of your treating consultant.
Can you help with sports injuries?
Of course! If you have sustained an injury that requires diagnosis, call us as soon as you can. We can arrange a speedy consultation to discuss your injury and start you on a treatment plan for repair and recovery. An early consultation can prevent you trying inappropriate treatments which may exacerbate any issues.
