Joint Reaction were delighted to welcome a roomful of healthcare professionals to the Village Hotel in Farnborough to hear our orthopaedic consultants share their knowledge, expertise and insights. Our specialist CPD seminar included five presentations by our highly experienced consultants, each with a Q&A session, plus a chance to talk to the consultants informally.
Over 70 people came to listen, network, and enjoy a delicious lunch for free, thanks to the generous support of our three sponsors;
Why Joint Reaction provide CPD seminars
Our orthopaedic consultants partner with trusted healthcare professionals to treat hundreds of patients a year. With only 30% of our patients requiring surgery, physiotherapy and other therapies play a key role in relieving their pain and supporting their recovery. Our partner healthcare professionals also play a major part in all effective post-surgery rehabilitation plans.
So, Joint Reaction hold regular educational programme events for physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, nurses and all other allied healthcare professionals. Attending our accredited Career Progression and Development (CPD) seminars helps our partner professionals keep their knowledge and understanding up to date, as part of their own personal development plan (PDP).
Our September seminar speakers and topics (summary)
Five of our orthopaedic consultants took time away from their busy schedules to share their insights in presentations that were accessible, enjoyable and detailed too. All were introduced by Mr Philip Rosell, Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon.
“One Shoulder. Every Age. A changing approach.”
Mr Ankit Desai
Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon
In a presentation packed with personal insights, Ankit discussed treatment options that are utilised more often in three distinct areas of shoulder surgery.
- Shoulder instability and remplissage
- Rotator cuff repair augmentation
- Increasing numbers of shoulder replacements
In his Q&A session, Ankit addressed a concern that ran throughout the morning – how long should it take both physiotherapists and patients to notice improvements?
Whilst actual timescales varied, he explained how private patients benefitted from more rapid treatment, allowing initiating of non-surgical management in many cases with appropriate physiotherapy and regular clinical reviews with the option to revert to surgery intervention quickly if not improving with conservative management. There is a clear advantage for private patients having access to rapid diagnosis, early investigations and onwards referral to therapists as required with ongoing review.
“Patient FAQs: what my PA is constantly asked about.”
Mr Adam Way
Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon
In an enjoyable presentation with a twist, Adam discussed what patients ask about the most and therefore probably what most of the audience got asked too! Covering aspects such as:
- Neck pain
- Thoracic pain
- Lower back pain
Adam gave insights into questions about levels of pain, job-related conditions, the efficacy of different pain medications and a sympathetic insight into concerns about cancer. He also revealed how being part of Joint Reaction enabled him to talk with colleagues and cross-refer patients, ensuring they see the right specialist if it’s not actually a spinal issue.
“Patellofemoral Instability”
Mr Zu Nawaz
Consultant Orthopaedic Hip and Knee Surgeon
Presenting with his trademark energy, Zu focussed on key aspects of this type of knee instability:
- Anatomy
- Biomechanics
- Assessment
- Diagnosis
- Management
Zu’s overview included many photo and video examples of patients presenting with malrotation, plus his own demonstrations on stage of associated gaits and stances. With his analogy of knee joints as a bowling alley, Zu provided attendees with a wealth of information and practical tips to take away and to help them refer patients to Joint Reaction with confidence.
“Foot and ankle conditions; the pub quiz”
Mr Nick Ward
Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon
In an engaging and relaxed “revision-style” presentation, Nick asked the audience to give their initial diagnosis on pain in specific locations of the foot. Aware that many of his audience were seeing patients walking in and asking for answers without any scans and x-rays, his answers to the quiz included discussions and diagnostic tips on:
- Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Tibialis Posterior Tendinopathy
- Lateral Ligament Strain
- Morton’s Neuroma
Nick also discussed the effectiveness of a range non-invasive, clinic-based treatments for various conditions, including shock wave, ultrasound, orthotics and the judicial use of ultrasound-guided injections.
“Thumb CMCJ Replacement”
Mr Gavin Brigstocke
Consultant Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon
In a fascinating presentation, Gavin gave practice-based insights into the latest generation of dual mobility thumb joint replacements. His presentation included an insight into the joint during surgery, as performed by himself at Frimley Park and Heatherwood Hospitals.
He guided attendees through a candid and detailed review of the evidence and the improved performance of the dual mobility MAÏA implants.
From his position at the forefront of this type of implant surgery, Gavin also presented his own data and images from his own cohort of patients, providing exclusive and exceptional insight for those attending our seminar.
Lunchtime 1 to 1 opportunities
Two of our non-speaker consultants, Mr Sarmad Kazzaz (spine) and Mr Reza Mansouri (hip and knee) also kindly came to meet attendees over lunch, providing further insights.
